Site report · Germany vs the UK
And why only one UK company has caught on
A mate of mine works on sites over in Germany. He told me tradesmen out there haven't worn canvas gear in years.
I thought he was winding me up. So I looked into it. He wasn't.
Walk onto any UK site and it's canvas everywhere you look. Walk onto a German site and you'll barely see a pair.
We're ten years behind and nobody's told us.
Over there, softshell isn't the premium option. It's the standard.
Lads doing exactly what we do — brickwork, first fix, groundworks — in fabric that actually moves.
They've had it since the mid-2010s. We're still buying the same stuff our grandads wore.
Same job. Same weather. Completely different trousers.
Don't get me wrong — canvas is tough. Nobody's arguing that.
But it's stiff. It doesn't flex. And after ten hours on site it feels like you're wearing a tent.
So why is every big name on the merchant's wall still cutting the same fabric?
Because it's cheap to buy, cheap to make, and we keep buying it. That's the whole answer.
Canvas is thick because it has to be. It's a basic fabric doing a hard job.
This is where you feel it straight away.
Squat down to a socket box. Kneel on a floor. Get up a loft ladder. Get yourself into a space with no room to turn round.
Canvas fights and rubs you the whole way. Softshell just goes with you.
Four times the flex. You stop noticing your trousers — which is the whole point of work trousers.

Canvas gets one tick. We'll give it that one.
Anyone who's done a summer in canvas knows the feeling. Sweating your arse off by ten in the morning and stuck like that till you get home.
Softshell is built to breathe. Heat gets out, you stay dry, you stop thinking about it.
Sounds like a small thing until you've done a full week in both.
The difference is mental.
Everyone assumes flexible means weak. It doesn't.
These take the same abuse as canvas. Brick, concrete, metal shavings, the lot.
I've had mine three months. Daily. Not a snag on them.
Most comfortable work trousers I've ever put on, and they've held up better than the canvas pair they replaced.
There's only one brand in the UK using this fabric. That's us.
